Grama Design's Frost-proofing of garden pots
Prevent your pots from cracking or breaking during winter frosty weatherFrost-proofing of pots
Grama Design produces sustainable pots that are designed to last a lifetime, even through long and harsh winters where the cold temperatures of the North can challenge any natural material.
We understand how water freezing can cause pipes in houses to burst, and the same applies to garden pots that are left filled with ice or water-saturated soil throughout the winter.
Grama Design’s Frost Protection for Pots prevent your pots from bursting or getting damaged during winter frost
When the temperature drops below zero, water begins to freeze and expand, which means your pots can crack due to frost. Therefore, no pot can be considered 100 % frost-proof.
That being said, most frost damage can be avoided if you plant your pots correctly from the start.
To prevent frost damage – follow this planting guide:
- Fill the pot with 1/3 of LECA or similar material to ensure good drainage underneath the soil in the pot. (Proper drainage allows excess water to drain away, preventing overwatering and frost damage)
- Place the pot in a way that the drainage hole is not blocked and water can flow out
- Remove the saucer during winter to prevent the drainage hole from being blocked
- Elevate the pot (without the saucer) from the ground by using small stones or pot feet
- If you remove the plants from the pot before winter, it’s important to completely empty the pot from soil
- Avoid bumping into the pots during the winter if they are kept outdoors.
No warranty is provided for the pot for any technical modifications such as self-watering systems, coatings, etc.
